Homeschooling on a Budget: Creative Ways to Save Money

A common concern that some parents have is whether homeschooling is affordable for them, especially in today’s economy. The good news is that there are various ways to homeschool without breaking the bank.

First, consider using free or low-cost resources and curriculums. Research online for guided lesson plans, resources, worksheets, etc. You can put together your curriculum with all the free resources you’ve gathered. Also, consider reusing materials from used curriculums. For example, I do not allow my son to write in any of the workbooks he has because I plan to use them again when his sibling reaches that grade level.

Join homeschool groups and ask other members if they have specific grade curriculums, they are willing to let you borrow or buy from them. Curriculums can become pricey, so getting used curriculums will save you money.

Use field trips and outings as learning opportunities. One pro about homeschooling is the ability to offer real-life experiences to your children. Find ways for them to engage in hands-on learning activities.

We live in a world of technology and free media, leverage it! Often, I will find YouTube videos that coincide with my son's lesson or an interactive game from Education.com that he can play.

For your homeschool space, keep things simple. Use the kitchen table if there’s not a designated desk or room for an in-home classroom. I purchased some bins from Dollar Tree to keep school supplies like pencils, erasers, sharpeners, etc. in. Stock up on supplies when the school year begins. Most times they are on sale and cost less. Also, participate in free school supply drives.

Homeschooling does not have to be expensive. Get creative with your lessons and take full advantage of free resources and opportunities.
